Youth Turkey Hunting

Well, it is that time of year again. This Saturday is the opening day of turkey season here in TN. It is a youth only weekend and we just can't wait to put these kids on some big birds. We love watching these young men get "tore up" when that big gobbler comes struttin' in. There's nothing like watching their hands and knees tremble at the sight of a hot Tom coming straight toward them. Hopefully, one of them learned a few lessons last year. It was Tyler Boyer's first year being the shooter and he was 0-2. He had two big Tom's right in his face last year but just couldn't settle down long enough to make the shot. We all had a great time together and I believe he has at least learned why we call it "huntin" and not "killin." That boy was as nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rockin' chairs. Lord willin' he will have a chance to redeem himself this year. The SHO will also be taking my pastor's son and it will be his first year turkey hunting. We just can't hardly wait to get in bed early this Friday night and rise early Saturday morning so we can all be set-up in time to see God raise the sun again!

I know many of you are just as excited as we are about turkey hunting this season. If you do not have a child of your own or another sibling to take on the youth hunt, then ask around at church and find a young man you can take hunting with you. You would be amazed at the impact you can have on these young people and the opportunities that will come to witness to them about the Lord Jesus Christ. There is nowhere else outside of the church house that I have had more chances to talk about the things of God than being right out there in the middle of His creation. It is so peaceful and quiet out there and these young people will finally slow-down long enough to consider eternal things, such as the destiny of their own soul. David said in Psalms 8:3-9, "When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour. Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet: All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field; The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas. O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!"

So, get out there and take some young people turkey hunting with you this year. Take your Bible with you and pray with them before you head in to the woods. Let them see light in you. Let them see what a good time they can have away from their laptops, Playstations, and Ipads. Let them see what a wonderful, abundant, and joyful life they can have being a Christian outdoorsman. Many times we are guilty of so badly wanting that kill or that good video footage that we end-up doing exactly the opposite of what we set out to do in the first place. I have to be careful myself not to be so focused on killing that bird that I end up ruining the hunt for my young boys. I have to remind myself that my goal is to "train them up in the way they should go" and to let them see Christ in me "the hope of glory." That is one of the main reasons our motto here at Supreme Hunting Outdoors is 1Corinthians 10:31(b), "...whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God."

  2. I remember the first time I got a chance at a bird. My hands were shaking so bad and it felt like the bird was never going to come in. That is a day i will never forget. Ill be praying for the young men going out with their dads, brothers, or just someone wanting to introduce someone to the outdoors that they witness GODS country at its finest and that when the opportunity arrives they can make it happen. GOOD LUCK TO ALL YOU LITTLE GUYS AND GALS!!!
